The work of American sculptor Isamu Noguchi is strongly connected to both Western and Eastern (especially Japanese) aesthetic traditions. Pisa, carved from a pinkish-brown marble striated with light and dark veins, is a tribute to the Italian sculptural tradition. Noguchi acquired the marble for this sculpture from a Tuscan quarry while living at the American Academy in Rome as a visiting artist.
