Sun, Moon & Stars (Brooch)

Internationally renowned for his kinetic sculpture, South Bend, Indiana native George Rickey also created a small body of jewelry. These rare works—primarily brooches and hair ornaments—can be seen as miniature sculptures and even include moving elements. It was during his tenure as an Indiana University faculty member that Rickey began exploring the idea of kinetic sculpture; indeed this brooch could be viewed as a small-scale study for the larger works. Like this brooch, with its astronomical imagery, Rickey’s early mobiles and kinetic sculptures often employed whimsical or lyrical elements.
