Perle Fine was one of the few women artists associated with the Abstract Expressionist circle. In the late 1930s and 40s, she was a member of the American Abstract Artists group, which promoted abstract painting. An important early work, In Staccato, with its geometric structure and restrained palette, suggests the influence of Dutch modernist Piet Mondrian.
