Matsuzaka was a Shingon Buddhist monk who took his religious orders at the age of fourteen and long held the position of abbot of the Hokai-in temple, located in Okayama prefecture. Matsuzaka goes beyond calligraphic rules in his simplification and condensation of the characters, making them very difficult to read.
