Jar with Bamboo Decoration

Apprenticed to the renowned potter Hamada Shoji, Shimaoka became a distinguished potter in his own right, earning the honor of Living National Treasure of Japan in 1996. The decoration on this jar is created by using a white-slip fill technique popular in Japan in the sixteenth century, which is derived from Korean porcelain (buncheong ware).
