Winter in Aizu

This print and others in the series are based on a trip Saitō made back to his birthplace in Fukushima Prefecture in northern Japan in 1938. The prints were first exhibited in 1942. Saitō’s ability to reduce three-dimensional forms to two-dimensional shapes is particularly well adapted to capturing the stark contrast between the snowy landscape and the darker forms of people and architecture.
