The text for this pair of scrolls is based on phrases from the Song poet Su Shi, who is also known by his sobriquet Dong Po (1037–1101). Kang was a Chinese scholar, calligrapher, prominent political thinker, and reformer of the Qing dynasty. It is also clear from his calligraphy that he made a close study of ancient seal script.
