Weng Tonghe was a Confucian scholar who became the imperial tutor for two Qing dynasty emperors, the short lived Tongzhi and Guangxu. He also held a number of prominent positions in the Qing government, and he served on the Grand Council from 1882 to 1884. In this calligraphy example, it is easy to follow the path of the brush as Weng begins each stroke with dense black ink and ends with dry brush.
