Islamic Art

The small but fascinating Islamic art collection provides an intriguing glimpse into the rich artistic heritage of Islam. Many materials and texts in the museum’s collection, such the Qur’an (the sacred book of Islam) and illustrated manuscripts represent centuries of the written word produced throughout the Islamic world, from North and Sub-Saharan Africa to the Indian subcontinent. Calligraphy and painting are frequently combined to represent the written heritage of Islam. The museum also has an outstanding collection of ceramics that help illuminate trade patterns and communications within and in relation to the Islamic world.
