The Hungarian Avant-Garde

Saturday, December 12, 2026, 10:00 AM – Sunday, May 23, 2027, 5:00 PM

Focus Gallery, Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Gallery, European and American Art, 1st Floor
Abstract painting with geometric shapes in black, white, green, and blue. Features intersecting lines and angular forms, creating a complex, layered composition within a rectangular frame.
Victor Vasarely (French, born Hungary, 1906–1997). No. 138-30 M, 1949. Oil on canvas, 36 ¼ × 23 ⅝ in. (92.1 × 60 cm). Gift of Mr. and Mrs. G. David Thompson, Eskenazi Museum of Art, Indiana University, 62.146

This exhibition marks the fifty-fifth anniversary of a groundbreaking show held at the Indiana University Art Museum in 1972. Hungarian Art: The Twentieth Century Avant-Garde was the first American exhibition devoted to Hungarian art after the onset of the Cold War, during which Hungary found itself behind the Iron Curtain. This focus exhibition features six works—several acquired in connection with the 1972 exhibition—by Hungarian avant-garde artists working before World War II and during the Communist era.
