About this Work

Unusual for a woman of her generation, Alice Schille enjoyed a career as a professional artist. Specializing in landscape painting, she traveled extensively throughout her life. After studying at the Art Students League in New York, she traveled to France in 1894, where she spent six years. Prior to World War I, she returned each year to Europe, including visits to Istanbul (formerly known as Constantinople) in 1901 and 1909. Schille may have traveled from Paris to Istanbul on the famed Orient Express, a rail service that ran between the two cities from 1889 to 1977.
Her watercolor of the Mosque of Sultan Ahmet (also known as the Blue Mosque) in Istanbul reveals her modern, spontaneous style. The mosque, dating to the early seventeenth century, is one of Istanbul's major tourist attractions; visitors marvel over its enormous, ornately tiled interior.
