About this Work

Having lived in Latvia, Russia, Germany, France, Cuba, Mexico, and Sweden before arriving in New York at the age of forty-seven, Adja Yunkers brought a diversity of influences to his Abstract Expressionist works. A noted printmaker, he championed an innovative approach to the media of woodcut. Its layering effect reflects his interest in collage. Derived from a series of prints inspired by the ancient ruins of Rome and the Aegean, this work's title, translated "ancient wafer," suggests the strata of older civilizations slowly revealed by classical scholars, such as collector and art historian Diether Thimme, and the passage of time.
