About this Work

In many of his early prints, the Surrealist Joan Miró combined a fantastic landscape with a pair of figures—in this case a birdlike creature hovering above a nude, reclining female figure. While there is no clear narrative, there is a mythic quality recalling a variation on the ancient Greek story of the eagle and Ganymede (Zeus in disguise courting a young boy). The grotesque distortion of the figures and the dark plate tone give the print a nightmarish quality.
