About this Work

The Venetian painter and printmaker Marco Ricci was known for fanciful landscapes, called capricci, which freely assembled classical motifs and imaginary elements. He probably visited Rome and sketched from the ruins of antique architecture, but he felt no compunction to be archaeologically correct. For Ricci, real time is suspended as eras mix together with monuments and figures in classical dress (or are they sculptures?) that inhabit a landscape already in decay.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
