About this Work

Cybele, known to the Romans as the Great Mother of the Gods, inspired one of the most popular cults of the imperial age. This small, circular building, like similar temples dedicated to female deities such as Vesta, the goddess of the hearth, represented an informal, personal, and occasionally wild practice of worship, in contrast to the more dignified rituals of the state religion.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
