About this Work

After Marco Ricci’s death, a portfolio of twenty-four etchings based on his views was published by the younger painter and printmaker Davide Fossati. These images combine realistic topographic detail with fantastic composite elements. Here, contemporary peasants and aristocrats on horseback or in carriages travel on a road that leads to a distant city gate, perhaps an entrance to Rome.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
