About this Work

Henry Moore’s sculptures have an affinity to Surrealism through their biomorphic forms and evocation of the erotic. The reclining nude was one of his most important motifs. Carved from a soft stone, Reclining Nude is simplified, reduced to basic shapes and contours which render it almost totally abstract, even though it is easy to recognize it as a figure. Moore has carefully emphasized the rough, organic texture of the stone, while simultaneously suggesting the smoothness of the figure’s body.
