About this Work

Calligraphers practice their art to gain proficiency in their craft. Sometimes their practice sheets become collector’s items. Here, one can see that the calligrapher, cAziz Efendi, has marked many of his letters with back-to-back rhomboids, the basic modules for determining proportioned script in Islamic calligraphic traditions.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
