About this Work

Cosimo I de Medici (1519–1574), Grand Duke of Tuscany, was a renowned patron of the arts. He enhanced the Florentine cityscape with new architecture, sculpture, and gardens, and maintained a collection of bronzes, marble statues, antiquities, and medals. He also commissioned medals bearing his own portrait.
