About this Work

Marshall Islands’ skirt panels were created by women from plaited pandanus fiber and worn as garments by both men and women. One panel would be worn as a man’s loincloth, while two panels were used to create a woman’s skirt.

This panel is typical of the intricate patterning and fine craftsmanship of a number of different islands in Micronesia. Woven panels of the Marshall Islands are known for the beautiful designs that form bands around a central undecorated section. Many of these designs are associated with tattooing.
