Irregularly shaped vase with blue and green colors applied in an overlapping pattern resembling waves.
The son of a distinguished potter Miyashita Zenju (1901–1968) Zenji helped his father with his work. He graduated from Kyoto Art University and began exhibiting in 1964. Recognized as a major talent, he has won numerous prizes and his work is in many public and private collections. This is an example of his “colored clay” work (saidei). He blends cobalt, chrome, and other metallic pigments into the clay which he then applies to the body of the pot in overlapping layers.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
