In the mid-1920s, while living in Paris, Lipchitz began exploring the use of negative space in a series of unique bronze sculptures he called “transparents.” In this work, intertwining positive and negative spaces result in an intricate and dynamic portrayal of Harlequin, a character from the Italian theatrical form known as commedia dell’arte. This sculpture was prized by Henry Hope, who curated several exhibitions on Jacques Lipchitz.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
