The center of a shallow two-handled cup is decorated with two men dancing face to face. The men are painted as black silhouettes with incised details and red garments. A patterned border circles this scene, followed by a black circular band, and another geometric pattern on the flattened rim.
This cup was made in Ionia, a region on the west coast of modern Turkey that was home to many Greek city-states. Ionian artists developed their own stylistic variations: in this case, a distinct pattern is used on the rim, and the main decoration appears on the interior of the cup. The subject matter features a pair of drunken revelers known as komasts. These two dancing figures are created in the black-figure technique but have red faces and wear red costumes.
