About this Work

The large role that decoration plays in Kuba society is nowhere more evident than in the jewelry worn by men and women as demonstrations of their elevated ranks: in most cases, form, materials, and patterns work together to indicate to knowledgeable viewers that exact place held by the wearer in the elaborate social and political hierarchy. Cowrie shells and glass beads were both imported items, which greatly enhanced their value, and cowrie shells were used as currency well into the nineteenth century.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
