About this Work

Mommard’s copies of prints from Dürer’s Small Passion are almost indistinguishable from the originals, right down to his bold appropriation of the artist’s “AD” monogram. Only the subtlest details betray his copyist’s hand. In Expulsion from the Garden, for example, the only clue is an almost imperceptible difference in the contour of Adam’s buttocks, while in The Last Supper the arc of a man’s fingers resting on the table is the tip-off. The fidelity of Mommard’s copies suggests they may possibly have been deliberate forgeries, capitalizing on the resurgent popularity of Dürer’s prints in the late 1500s.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
