A terracotta sculpture of a bearded man in robes standing with eyes downcast. He holds an open book in one hand while the other hand comes up to his face.
This bozzetto is an artist’s working model for a sculpture that would ultimately be carved from marble or cast in bronze. Few such models from the Renaissance have been preserved, making this example particularly valuable for the insight it gives into the development of the artist’s ideas. Guglielmo della Porta was influenced by Mannerism, as reflected here in the elegantly elongated and curved body of the figure and its sense of movement.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
