About this Work

Peter Voulkos was an influential and innovative ceramic artist and sculptor, applying the aesthetics and spontaneity of Abstract Expressionist painting to three-dimensional work. Around 1957, Voulkos started experimenting with clay sculpture, which he fired in a seven-foot tall walk-in kiln. By blurring the distinctions between pottery and sculpture, Voulkos helped revitalize the craft of ceramics in the post-World War II era. Feather River, whose form suggests a figure with outstretched arms, is also—like the paintings by Pederson and Dubuffet—representative of postwar artists’ interest in melding abstraction and representation.
