[4] Alexej von Jawlensky Archive, Alexej von Jawlensky: Catalogue Raisonné of the Oil Paintings, Vol. 1 (1890–1914), London: Sotheby’s Publications, 1991 (cat. no. 296). It is uncertain how long the painting was with Jawlensky and where it was kept. In 1914, the family was forced to leave Germany and settled in Saint Prex, Switzerland; they left most of their belongings, including works of art, in Munich in the care of Adolf Erbsloh and Lily Klee. The present painting may have remained there as well. In 1920, the Jawlenskys returned to Munich to wind up household affairs, at which point the artist signed and/or dated many of his paintings, possibly including this one (Biographical notes prepared by the Alexej von Jawlensky-Archive S.A., Locarno, Switzerland, accessed online at: http://www.jawlensky.ch/index.php/home).
