About this Work

One of many historic cultures in Peru the Vicús culture dates to 100 BCE to 400 CE. Like this crown, a large amount of adornment created by Vicús artists used electroplating, a technique where a thin layer of gold was used to cover the copper surface of an object. This process creates an object which would have, in its original condition, appeared to be solid gold while only covered with gold layers millimeters thick.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
