About this Work

On this handsome drinking cup, the ivy wreaths and the festoon of bull's heads (bucrania) were built up in low relief to make the gold foil adhere. Gilding on painted vases was practiced in Athens from the late 6th century BCE.

[1] Robin Symes (b. 1939) operated as an art and antiquities dealer in London from about 1970. Robin Symes Limited was founded in 1977 and dissolved in 2005.
