About this Work

Used singly or in pairs and often in combination with seeds, ornaments, such as this one, were used as toggles for fiber cords on objects such as drums and shell trumpets and as slings for household objects such as coconut containers. They were also worn as hair ornaments. The miniature figures show the goggle eyes, flaring nostrils, and broad mouth that characterize Marquesan figural arts.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
