About this Work

This print of early evening at an inn along a mountain stream, like Yoshida Hiroshi’s “Cryptomeria,” could be read as a potent symbol of patriotism, reminding a Japanese audience of the unique and idyllic landscape that was worth fighting to preserve. Equally, this could be an example of the locations Hiroshi was so fond of discovering on his hikes in the mountains—out-of-the-way places with their own serene beauty.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
