About this Work

Born in the Russian Empire, Max Weber and his family immigrated to the United States in 1891, settling in Brooklyn. After studying art in New York and Paris, he became one of the foremost American advocates of abstraction and cubism in painting. After World War I, however, Weber focused on a more expressionistic, figurative style. Themes from his Jewish heritage and the human body became his primary subjects. In Beautification, depicting three nude women arranging their hair, Weber meditates upon beauty, vanity, and the female figure.
