About this Work

In mandala (spiritual maps) such as this one, the Buddha is represented in symbols rather than in human form. An image of this size would have hung in a monastery. The large footprint refers to the Buddha and his presence among the community of monks.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
