About this Work

In 1842, after being banished from Edo for violating the government’s sumptuary laws, Ichikawa Danjūrō VII moved to Osaka. This surimono probably served as an introduction of his familial line of actors to the audiences of Osaka and Kyoto. Danjūrō is dressed for the role of Benkei from the play Kanjinchō, which was based on events in the life of the warrior Minamoto Yoshitune (d. 1189). The text lists the Ichikawa family lineage.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
