About this Work

Bowls of marble, made in a range of sizes, were well-known in this early period. This large example beautifully preserves its pink-colored paint in the interior. The color remains vibrant, but it was probably a brighter red originally. A number of other bowls from this period also preserve traces of red paint on the inside of the vessel. Since almost all of these bowls were found in graves, it is possible that they were used as part of funerary rituals.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
