About this Work

Rakusan Tsuchiya was born in Kyoto and studied art under the great Kyoto painter, Seiho Takeuchi, who was one of the formative artists of Nihonga, or the new nativist style of Japanese style painting (in contrast to Chinese or Western painting) embraced during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While highly stylized, the painters all base their work in a close study of nature. Rakusan, following the example of his teacher, produced elegant studies of birds and flowers, which are equally decorative and true to life.
