Notes:

[1] Julius Freund (1869–1941) owned a clothing factory in Berlin and collected work by German artists, with a focus on Romanticism and the Berlin Secession. He was the father of the photographer Gisele Freund. In 1933, Freund placed some of his collection in Switzerland for safekeeping. In 1939, he and his wife emigrated to London, where he later died, apparently in an air raid. Much of his collection was sold at the Galerie Fischer in Lucerne.
