About this Work

Hishikawa Moronobu, the son of a textile embroiderer and dyer, was a painter, printmaker, and prolific illustrator. He produced not only single prints, but also prints in series, as well as illustrated books. There are fifty-nine books which bear his signature and at least an additional one hundred more associated with his name. His subjects ranged from the Japanese classics such as the Tale of Genji to depictions of actors, courtesans and workers in the city of Edo (Tokyo). His strong black and white designs are visually striking and his attention to details gives the modern viewer a window onto the seventeenth century word of Japan.
