About this Work

The Etruscans were master metalsmiths and, given the popularity of metal vessels, Etruscan potters began to create pottery vessels that imitated metal. This kantharos was certainly created in imitation of a metal type and, as a pottery shape, is believed to be an early Etruscan innovation.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
