About this Work

Greek pottery from Corinth became very popular in Etruria. Etruscan artists soon began imitating the Corinthian style. However, on other vessels such as this amphora, the style is adapted rather than imitated. The single band of animals was created using the black-figure technique, but it is augmented by areas of added white and purple that reflect metalworking traditions. The surrounding scale-like decoration is also reminiscent of metalwork.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
