About this Work

Moments before his conversion, Eustace kneels before the stag he was hunting, as the figure of Christ addresses him from a cross between its antlers. This extraordinary apparition is only one detail amid the much larger miracle of the Creation in Dürer’s largest engraving, which rivals the size of a small easel painting. The focus on creaturely life underscores this cosmic perspective, from the pack of hunting dogs and majestic steed in the foreground to the starling-shaped flock of birds in the farthest recesses of the background, whose flight assumes an uncanny sense of ornament.
