About this Work

The impressive procession of sixty-nine figures, four chariots, and sixteen horses indicates that the event presented here is prestigious. At the center of all the figures, a woman unveils herself while facing a man. This action almost certainly refers to a traditional wedding. While the bride and groom remain unidentified, they are clearly important--probably gods (such as Hera and Zeus) or a hero and heroine from the mythic past. This cup is the "name vase" of this artist, meaning that the artist's identity is based on the stylistic characteristics of this particular vase.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
