About this Work

Apprenticed to the renowned potter Hamada Shoji, Shimaoka became a distinguished potter in his own right earning the honor of “Living National Treasure” in 1996. The decoration on this jar is created by using white slip fill technique popular in Japan in the sixteenth century derived from Korean porcelain (buncheong ware).
