About this Work

Born into a family of traditional potters in a time when demand for their work and others in the pottery village of Mashiko was diminishing, Sakuma might have faded into obscurity. However, in 1924 he befriended the potter Hamada Shoji (1894–1977) and invited him into his home and studio. Sakuma ceramics are well known in Japan, but less so in the West
