About this Work

Greeks settled throughout the Mediterranean, and some of the oldest Greek cities were established on the western coast of Turkey. This region was known as Ionia and consisted of a series of independent city-states. Many of these cities fostered famous workshops and produced well-known pottery and sculpture. This pitcher is enlivened by a selection of running animals and may represent a hunting scene.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
