About this Work

By the fourth century, when St. Jerome made his sojourn in the Egyptian desert, the Christians of Egypt, known as the Copts, had developed a vibrant native art. Their tapestry-woven textiles, wood or stone carvings, and metalwork mingled Egyptian images with classical themes or Christian motifs.

This dancer could have represented a maenad in a Dionysiac revelry, a scene drawn from classical mythology. It probably was used as a large hanging or a curtain.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
