[1] In a letter to Thomas T. Solley, former Director of the Indiana University Art Museum, dated October 17, 1972, Eleanore Saidenberg of Saidenberg Galleries states that Matisse purchased the watercolor from John Quinn and sold it to Spingarn. It is not presently known when Spingarn may have acquired it or when he began collecting.
