About this Work

The original Hat Rack hung from the ceiling of Duchamp’s studio in New York in 1917. By suspending this object from the ceiling, he rendered its function useless, and transformed it into a kinetic sculpture. Arguably more interesting than the object itself are the shadows it casts on the walls around it.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
