About this Work

Kobayashi Kiyochika was a Japanese artist who produced woodblock prints during the Meiji period (1868–1912), a time of increased economic and cultural exchange between Japan and the West. Although Kiyochika was largely self-taught, there is evidence that suggests he spent some time working with masters of traditional Japanese painting as well as the English news illustrator Charles Wirgman (1832-91). Familiar with both eastern and western artistic approaches, Kiyochika’s art is a fusion of both traditions.
